NCIS: Los Angeles star Eric Christian Olsen and his wife, actress Sarah Wright welcomed son Wyatt Oliver on Friday, Aug. 16, the couple tell PEOPLE exclusively.

“I’ve been a part of some pretty incredible experiences in my life, but I’ve never been a part of something so surreal, so life affirming and so insanely beautiful as watching my son come into this world,” says proud papa Olsen, 36, who plays Detective Marty Deeks on the popular CBS drama.

“It was this watershed moment where I knew that everything I valued before seems finite and temporary.”

Wyatt entered the world at 7:45 pm, weighing 9 lbs. 8 oz.

“Sarah wanted to do a natural birth at home and she fought through 17 hours of intense labor before we finally got to meet Wyatt,” Olsen says. “I can only take stock in how lucky I am to have this amazing, powerful, woman in my life, and a beautiful new son.”

This is the first child for Olsen and Wright, 29, a frequent guest star on the NBC sitcom Parks and Recreation.

The couple wed in June 2012 at their family ranch near Jackson Hole, Wyoming.

The mystery of why actor Eric Christian Olsen can’t stop smiling these days has been solved.

The NCIS: Los Angeles star and wife Sarah Wright are expecting their first child — a boy! — in August, they tell PEOPLE exclusively.

“When they handed me the 3D sonogram and I saw Sarah’s perfect lips and that little Norwegian nose just like mine, I was overcome with a sense of clarity in the world that I can only imagine is beginning of fatherhood,” Olsen, 35, tells PEOPLE.

“We’re so excited and can’t wait to meet him.”

The couple, who exchanged vows last June at their family’s ranch near Jackson Hole, Wyo. have been thinking about starting their family for a while now.

“I can’t imagine a better mother for our future children,” Olsen told PEOPLE the day after they wed.
