With the amount of untreated and partially treated mental illness that I have witnessed through the library and at church (we are downtown and welcome the homeless to worship and have coffee), it is surprising how prevalent it is. People who seem perfectly normal can in the course of one conversation scare the bejeebus out of you. The fear and paranoia and confusion that these people live with on a daily basis is heartbreaking and scary. There was one gentleman who when he took his medication would shake, his whole body would just vibrate, but if he was off his meds he was schizophrenic and he was just so intense and scary. You never knew from one day to the next who he would be.
