I was truly shaken up when I read this article. I read a similar one last month about a father who refused to entertain the idea that his six year old daughter had a mental illness. She was violent and verbally abusive, but he thought he could handle it. His wife finally went behind his back and took her to a mental hospital. She had childhood onset schizophrenia and was institutionalized for a while. She's now back home, and things seem to be ok for now. She also had an I.Q. that was off the charts.
I had no idea this was as prevalent as it seems to be. I think one way to prevent these shootings is to educate parents, screen kids for behavior like this and get them treatment as early as possible. It's only one part of the solution, but it's a big one.
